In the cool evening of November 19, 2016, a tragic event unfolded in Shreveport, Louisiana, that would claim the lives of two individuals. Huey Leonard, a 37-year-old African American male, was driving in the Mooretown neighborhood with his friend, 27-year-old Ashley Williams. Their journey was violently interrupted when another vehicle intentionally rear-ended their Nissan Versa, forcing it off the road and into a ditch in the 4000 block of Crosby Street.
Following the collision, the
driver of the other vehicle, a tan SUV, approached the disabled Nissan and opened fire on its occupants. Huey Leonard was struck by the gunfire and died at the scene. Ashley Williams was also critically injured but managed to provide crucial information to bystanders and the first responding officers before she was transported to the hospital. In her final moments, she identified her attacker, exclaiming, 'Arthur Anderson shot me! Arthur shot us … please don't let me die!' Williams succumbed to her injuries shortly after arriving at the hospital.
The investigation swiftly focused on Arthur Deandre Anderson, who had been in a relationship with Ashley Williams that had ended just days before the shooting. Evidence gathered by the Shreveport Police Department, including Williams' dying declaration and cell phone records showing 36 calls from Anderson to Williams on the day of the murders, pointed to him as the primary suspect. Anderson was arrested on November 21, 2016, and charged with two counts of second-degree murder.
Arthur Anderson's trial began in October 2022. The prosecution presented a compelling case that included testimony from various expert witnesses specializing in firearms, accident reconstruction, and forensic analysis. The jury also heard the powerful recording of Ashley Williams identifying Anderson as the shooter. On October 31, 2022, the jury found Arthur Anderson guilty on both counts of second-degree murder. Subsequently, on November 30, 2022, a judge sentenced Anderson to two mandatory life terms in prison without the possibility of parole, probation, or suspension of sentence, ensuring he would be held accountable for the senseless deaths of Huey Leonard and Ashley Williams.
