In the late hours of a Saturday in Shreveport, Louisiana, a dispute tragically escalated, claiming the life of Bryan DeSean Stewart, a 23-year-old African American man. On February 4, 2017, in the Queensborough neighborhood, Stewart was involved in a heated verbal altercation with another man. The argument took a fatal turn when both men reportedly drew firearms and exchanged gunfire.
Shortly after 10 p.m., the sound of shots prompted Stewart's nephew and a friend to drive through the
area of Arkansas Avenue and West Caperton Street. There, they discovered Stewart, who had sustained a fatal gunshot wound. They rushed him to Willis-Knighton Medical Center on Greenwood Road, but he succumbed to his injuries. The Caddo Parish Coroner’s office later confirmed his identity.
The narrative of that night continued to unfold as Shreveport police were called to the intersection of Arkansas Avenue and Lakeshore Drive. They found the other man involved in the shootout suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was transported to University Health for emergency surgery to address his life-threatening injuries. A search of a nearby home yielded the discovery of two firearms and a significant quantity of illegal narcotics.
