In the spring of 2017, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace of a Lake Charles, Louisiana neighborhood, tragically ending the life of 22-year-old Cody Lastrapes. On the evening of April 6th, Lastrapes and three companions, a man and two women, found themselves in the wrong place at the wrong time in the 2000 block of Tulip Street. They were approaching a black Mazda Tribute when occupants of another vehicle unleashed a barrage of bullets, firing indiscriminately into their car.
Lastrapes was fatally wounded in the chaotic scene, while his three acquaintances sustained injuries.
The investigation that followed revealed a grim picture of street violence. Authorities later determined that Lastrapes and his friends were not the intended targets of the shooters. The actual target, Deon T. Demourelle, aged 19, was nearby when the shooting began, sparking a gun battle. At the scene, a staggering 79 shell casings from four different firearms were recovered by law enforcement, a testament to the intensity of the assault.
In the aftermath, the Lake Charles Police Department moved swiftly to identify and apprehend those responsible. Their investigation led to the indictment of three individuals. J'Kristopher D. Scott, 19, and a 16-year-old, Jamar Harmon, faced the most severe charges, including one count of second-degree murder and three counts of attempted second-degree murder. The Calcasieu Parish District Attorney's Office made the decision to try Harmon as an adult. The intended target of the initial shooting, Deon T. Demourelle, was also indicted on charges of illegal use of weapons and obstruction of justice. The tragic death of Cody Lastrapes served as a stark reminder of the devastating and far-reaching consequences of gun violence.
