Jonathan Joseph Besson, a 29-year-old male, was discovered deceased in his apartment on South Sherwood Forest Boulevard in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, on the morning of June 5, 2017. An investigation by the East Baton Rouge Sheriff's Office determined that Besson's death was a homicide resulting from a gunshot wound to his chest. The events leading to the discovery of his body began when his roommate was the victim of a carjacking and robbery earlier that day.

Besson's roommate had given a ride to two men, Jamarcus Tate and his brother, Donte Tate. They directed him to a location in North Baton Rouge where they met a third individual, Cardale Linson. The three men then allegedly assaulted and robbed the roommate, tied him up, and forced him into the trunk of his own car. The roommate managed to escape and contacted the Baton Rouge Police Department to report the carjacking and robbery. He also expressed concern for Besson's safety as the suspects had taken his apartment keys. This prompted deputies to conduct a welfare check at the apartment, where they found Besson's body.
Following the initial investigation, law enforcement apprehended 22-year-old Cardale Linson and 25-year-old Jamarcus Tate. They were spotted in the stolen vehicle on North Foster Drive. A third suspect, 22-year-old Donte Tate, was also identified and sought by authorities in connection with the homicide. The investigation suggested that the motive for the crime was robbery.
