On a Halloween night in Amelia, Louisiana, the life of 23-year-old Christopher Jamal Singleton was tragically cut short. On October 31, 2017, just before 11 p.m., deputies from the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office responded to reports of a shooting on Friendship Alley. There they found Singleton unresponsive, suffering from a gunshot wound. He was rushed to Teche Regional Medical Center, but tragically, he was pronounced dead.
The investigation quickly zeroed in on a suspect: 23-year-old
Hakeemia Bias, who also resided on Friendship Alley. Authorities determined that Bias had confronted Singleton and fired a handgun, striking him. A warrant was issued for Bias's arrest on a charge of second-degree murder. On November 2, 2017, Bias turned himself in to detectives at the St. Mary Parish Sheriff's Office in Morgan City.
As the legal process unfolded, the initial charge against Bias was modified. In March 2018, a grand jury indicted him on the lesser charge of manslaughter in connection with Singleton's death. During the investigation, a witness account emerged suggesting that Singleton may have been in possession of a firearm after exiting a vehicle, at which point shots were fired.
