In the autumn of 2017, the life of 38-year-old Ernest Samuel Miller of Lake Charles, Louisiana, was tragically cut short. On the afternoon of November 8, 2017, Miller was shot multiple times at the intersection of Mill and Ryan streets in downtown Lake Charles. He sustained two bullet wounds, one to his arm and another that pierced his back and heart.
The man responsible for Miller's death was identified as Joey Julian of Baton Rouge.
It was reported that Julian and Miller were acquaintances. Following the shooting, Julian fled the scene in a local resident's vehicle. His escape was short-lived, however, as he was apprehended by Louisiana State Police troopers on Interstate 10, just east of the Atchafalaya Basin bridge.
The legal proceedings that followed spanned five years. Finally, in November 2022, just as a jury was being selected for his trial, Joey Julian pleaded guilty to a charge of manslaughter. His defense attorneys stated that while Julian was responsible for Miller's death, they maintained that he acted in self-defense. By pleading guilty to manslaughter, Julian avoided a potential second-degree murder conviction, which carries a mandatory life sentence. His sentencing was scheduled for March 2023.
