In the spring of 2018, Herbert Foster III, a 35-year-old man from New Orleans, found his life tragically cut short. On the evening of May 13, 2018, what should have been a festive Mother's Day ended in violence in the Gentilly neighborhood. launched an investigation into the shooting. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, and on May 29, 2018, an arrest warrant was issued for 21-year-old Donnell Brown III. The charges listed in the warrant were for the second-degree murder of Herbert Foster and the attempted second-degree murder of another individual who was also injured in the incident.
Further details of the case emerged following Brown's apprehension. In September 2018, an Orleans Parish grand jury indicted Brown on multiple counts, including the second-degree murder of Foster. The indictment also included charges of attempted second-degree murder, aggravated assault with a firearm, and aggravated battery.

Authorities suggested the violence stemmed from a dispute over a woman with whom Foster was in a relationship and who was Brown's ex-girlfriend.
