In the early morning hours of July 7, 2018, a dispute inside a Baton Rouge hookah lounge escalated into a fatal shooting that left one man dead. Forty-year-old Derrick 'TeeDee' Johnson, a male, was killed in the incident.
The altercation began inside The Hookah Lounge on Florida Boulevard, leading to a group of individuals, including Johnson, being escorted out by security.
Following his removal, Johnson armed himself with a handgun and attempted to force his way back into the establishment. When security officers intervened, Johnson threatened them with the firearm.
In response to the threat, one of the security officers discharged their weapon, striking Johnson multiple times. He was pronounced dead at the scene. The gunfire also resulted in non-life-threatening injuries to two other individuals, who were transported to a local hospital.
An investigation into the shooting followed. It was reported that the security guard's use of force was considered justified in the face of an armed threat. Consequently, there were no arrests made in connection with the death of Derrick Johnson, and the security officer was not publicly identified as a suspect.
