In the early morning hours of August 8, 2018, the life of 24-year-old Rodney D. Richards of Natchitoches, Louisiana, was tragically cut short in a burst of gunfire. Richards, a male, was a passenger in a Nissan sedan driven by his friend, 24-year-old Cordarious Cortez Smith. The two men were reportedly leaving a home music studio in the Payne Sub-Division off of Louisiana Highway 6 East in the Grand Ecore area.
It was then that their vehicle was ambushed.
Shortly after 1:40 a.m., the Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office 911 Center was flooded with calls reporting shots fired in the vicinity of Michelle Drive. Responding deputies discovered the Nissan crashed in a ditch, having struck a tree. Inside the car, they found both Richards and Smith suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency medical services arrived at the scene, but neither of the young men could be saved. Both were pronounced dead by the Natchitoches Parish Coroner's Office.
The immediate aftermath of the shooting saw a significant law enforcement response. Investigators and patrol deputies worked through the night, using special lighting equipment to process the crime scene and collect evidence. In the initial stages of the investigation, detectives canvassed the neighborhood, speaking with residents and interviewing potential witnesses in the hopes of identifying those responsible for the double homicide.
Despite their efforts, the investigation into the murders of Rodney D. Richards and Cordarious Cortez Smith has grown cold. As of May 2024, nearly six years after the fatal shooting, no arrests have been made in the case, and no suspects have been publicly identified. The Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's Office continues to ask for the public's assistance, hoping that new information will lead to a breakthrough and bring justice to the families of the two young men whose lives were taken that summer night.
