In the late summer of 2018, the city of New Orleans was the scene of a grim discovery that left a community searching for answers. On August 30th, police were called to a residence in the 2400 block of Feliciana Street, where they found the bodies of two men inside. One of the victims was identified as Cedric Burgess, a 41-year-old Black male. The other man was 60-year-old Ray Certain.
The initial investigation pointed to a violent altercation that had claimed both of their lives.
The Orleans Parish Coroner's Office later determined that Cedric Burgess had died from a fatal gunshot wound. His companion, Ray Certain, had succumbed to injuries from a sharp object. The New Orleans Police Department's homicide unit took charge of the double homicide investigation, working to piece together the events that led to the two men's deaths. In the course of their inquiries, detectives identified a person of interest they wished to speak with.
Authorities publicly named Charun Davis as a person of interest in the case. At the time, they clarified that Davis was not wanted in connection with the homicides, but they believed he might possess valuable information that could aid their investigation. Despite this development, no immediate arrests were made in the case.
As time passed, public information regarding any significant breakthroughs in the investigation dwindled. No suspects were publicly named or charged in the deaths of Cedric Burgess and Ray Certain. The case, like many others, fell into a state of unresolved limbo, leaving the family and friends of the victims without a sense of closure or justice for their loved ones.
