In the Algiers neighborhood of New Orleans, a promising young life was tragically cut short. Keyron Ross, an 18-year-old male, was sitting in his car in the 3800 block of Texas Drive on January 26, 2022, when he was fatally shot. Despite being shot in the head, he was still breathing on his own when he was taken to the hospital. He succumbed to his injuries and passed away on January 28, 2022.
Keyron, affectionately known as 'Tootie,' was a beloved student-athlete at Edna Karr High
School, where he excelled on both the football and baseball teams. His talent had earned him a dual athletic scholarship to the University of Georgia. At the time of his death, he was eagerly awaiting the birth of his first child, a son who would be born just months after his passing. The community mourned the loss of a young man with a bright future ahead of him, holding vigils to honor his memory and to call for an end to gun violence. His mother expressed her profound grief, stating her belief that the person responsible for her son's death was someone he knew, a friend who had even been a guest in their home.
The investigation into Keyron's death quickly focused on a suspect. Days after the shooting, Tyrese Carter, who was 19 at the time, turned himself in to the New Orleans Police Department. It was later reported that Carter and Ross were teammates. Carter was subsequently arrested and indicted by an Orleans Parish Grand Jury on charges of second-degree murder and obstruction of justice.
In August 2023, the case came to a resolution in the courtroom. Tyrese Carter pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. For his role in the death of Keyron Ross, he was sentenced to 40 years in prison. An additional 10 years were added to his sentence for obstruction of justice, bringing his total potential prison time to 50 years. The conviction brought a measure of closure to a case that had deeply affected the community and served as a somber reminder of the devastating impact of gun violence on the city's youth.
