In the early morning hours of September 25, 2018, the quiet of a Bossier City, Louisiana neighborhood was shattered by a fatal act of violence. Tech. Sgt. Joshua L. Kidd, a 30-year-old male, was discovered unresponsive outside his residence with a gunshot wound to his chest. He was pronounced dead at the scene by firefighters. Kidd, a dedicated member of the U.S. Air Force, served as a loading standardization crew chief with the 2nd Maintenance Group at Barksdale Air Force Base.
His military career, which began in March 2008, had taken him to assignments in South Korea and Germany before his posting in Louisiana.
The investigation into Kidd's death quickly pointed to a tragic confrontation. It is believed that he had interrupted a vehicle burglary at his home. In the ensuing moments, as he chased the individuals from his property, he was fatally shot. The Bossier City Police Department launched an intensive investigation, which led them to two teenage suspects. Within a week of the shooting, detectives had gathered enough evidence to make arrests.
On October 1, 2018, authorities took 17-year-old Jareona Crosby and a 15-year-old male, later identified as Alonzo Wilson, into custody. Both were initially charged with second-degree murder. The investigation revealed that the pair were also allegedly involved in a series of vehicle burglaries in the area, leading to additional charges of simple burglary and theft of a firearm. As the legal process unfolded, both teenagers were indicted and charged as adults for the murder of Joshua Kidd. DNA evidence played a crucial role in the case, with Crosby's DNA reportedly found on the door handle of Kidd's vehicle and Wilson's on a flashlight left at the scene.
In 2019, Alonzo Wilson pleaded guilty to his role in the murder and was sentenced as an adult to 50 years in prison without the possibility of parole. The following year, in November 2020, Jareona Crosby, then 19, also pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. Prosecutors stated that Crosby was the one who was armed and fired the fatal shot as Kidd pursued them. She was subsequently sentenced to life in prison.
