On a cold February evening in Lutcher, Louisiana, the life of 22-year-old Destin Smith was tragically cut short. On February 11, 2019, deputies from the St. James Parish Sheriff's Office were dispatched to a local apartment complex following reports of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered Smith suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital for medical attention, but unfortunately, he succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into
the young man's death led detectives to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. Quannae Clark, a 27-year-old from the neighboring town of Gramercy, was soon arrested and booked into the St. James Parish Detention Center. The case then proceeded through the legal system, and on May 6, 2019, a St. James Parish Grand Jury returned a true bill of indictment against Clark for the first-degree murder of Destin Smith.
Initially, Clark pleaded not guilty to the grave charge. However, as the legal process unfolded, a significant development occurred just before the case was set to go to a jury trial. On August 30, 2022, in a plea agreement with prosecutors, Quannae Clark, then 30 years old, pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter in connection with Destin Smith's death.
