In the quiet city of Lafayette, Louisiana, the life of 18-year-old Christian Roper, a young man, was abruptly ended on the evening of March 13, 2019. The Grand Pointe Apartments on Kaliste Saloom Road became the scene of a tragedy when Roper was found shot in the parking lot. His death would set in motion a multi-state investigation to bring those responsible to justice.
The Lafayette Police Department's Criminal Investigations Division quickly identified a primary suspect, 27-year-old
Tyler James Hebert of New Iberia. Believing he had fled the state, investigators enlisted the help of the U.S. Marshals Service Violent Offender Task Force. Their search led them to Aurora, Colorado, where Hebert was located and apprehended. He was arrested on a warrant for first-degree murder and subsequently awaited extradition back to Louisiana to face charges in connection with Roper's death.
Further investigation into the homicide revealed the involvement of three other individuals. Lafayette Police arrested 18-year-old Ayden C. McDonald and 19-year-old Trevis L. Thomas, both from Lafayette, on charges of attempted first-degree robbery, suggesting a motive for the fatal shooting. Additionally, 20-year-old Derek J. Junca of Baldwin was taken into custody and charged with principal to first-degree murder. All three were booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center, joining Hebert upon his return to Louisiana. The arrests painted a clearer picture of a robbery that tragically escalated, leaving a young man dead and several others facing serious felony charges.
