On Father's Day, June 16, 2019, Joseph Stanley Boxie Jr., a 49-year-old man from Opelousas, Louisiana, was tragically killed in what authorities described as an execution-style murder at his home on Martin Luther King Drive. Boxie had just returned home when he was ambushed and fatally shot ten times with a modified AK-47 assault rifle. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of the morning, left him deceased at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led police to Kendall
D. Singleton of La Place. An eyewitness identified Singleton as the man in a white car at the scene of the crime. Subsequently, on July 5, 2019, Singleton was arrested at the residence he shared with his wife. A search of their home uncovered a modified AK-47 assault rifle, consistent with the weapon used in the murder, located in a dresser drawer in the master bedroom.
Four months after the shooting, Singleton was charged with second-degree murder. In March 2022, an additional charge of domestic abuse aggravated battery was added to his indictment, suggesting a potential motive related to domestic issues. His trial began in May 2024, and after a short deliberation, a unanimous jury found him guilty of the second-degree murder of Joseph Stanley Boxie Jr.
Following his conviction, Kendall Singleton was sentenced to life in prison at hard labor without the possibility of probation, parole, or suspension of sentence. He has since appealed his conviction, but the verdict brought a measure of closure to the family and friends of Stanley Boxie Jr., who was remembered as a loving father, a truck driver, and a well-respected member of his community.
