In the late summer of 2019, the life of a vibrant 19-year-old woman, Demeisha LaShay Hines, was tragically cut short in Monroe, Louisiana. Known for her beautiful smile and love for dancing, the young African American woman was a cherished member of her community. Hines, born on January 19, 2000, had been a co-captain of the dance team at Berg Jones Elementary and had attended Carroll Junior High and Carroll High School.
She was working at Newk's of West Monroe at the time of her death.
On the evening of Sunday, August 4, 2019, the Monroe Police Department responded to a call that would unfold into a homicide investigation. Officers were dispatched to the 3100 block of Polk Street in South Monroe, where they discovered Hines suffering from a gunshot wound. She was immediately transported to a local hospital for medical attention. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Demeisha LaShay Hines succumbed to her injuries, her life abruptly ended by an act of violence. Her death was officially recorded on August 5, 2019.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to a person of interest. Within a day of the incident, the Monroe Police Department announced the arrest of a suspect. The individual taken into custody was identified as Jeremiah Jackson Jr., a 21-year-old resident of Monroe. The investigation suggested that the shooting was the tragic culmination of a domestic dispute between Hines and Jackson.
Following his arrest, Jeremiah Jackson Jr. was charged with one count of second-degree murder in connection with the death of Demeisha Hines. He was subsequently booked into the Ouachita Correctional Center as the legal process against him began. The community was left to mourn the loss of a young woman whose life was full of promise, a sentiment echoed in the remembrances shared by her grieving family and friends. She was survived by her mother, three sisters, and three brothers, who were left to cherish her memory.
