In the summer of 2020, a tragedy struck a New Orleans neighborhood, forever altering the lives of one family. Devonte 'D-Man' Bryant, a 9-year-old Black male, was fatally shot on the evening of July 13th. The incident occurred in the 2100 block of Pauger Street, located in the city's Seventh Ward. Devonte, who was known for his joyful spirit, was playing outside his home when gunfire erupted.
He was struck in the head and tragically died at the scene, just 17 days before he would have celebrated his tenth birthday.
The shooting that claimed Devonte's life also left two other teenagers wounded. A teenage girl was shot in the stomach and a teenage boy was shot in the leg, but both survived their injuries. In the immediate aftermath, police began their investigation, piecing together the events of that fatal evening. It was reported that individuals on foot approached the group and began firing. Authorities later located a white Jeep that was believed to have been used as a getaway vehicle in the attack. Despite this, the individuals responsible for the shooting have not been publicly identified. Law enforcement officials have stated that they do not believe Devonte was the intended target of the shooting.
In the days and years that have followed, the case of Devonte Bryant's murder has remained unsolved, and no arrests have been made. The community and his family have been left to grapple with the senseless loss of a young life. A reward of $10,000 was offered for any information that could lead to an arrest in the case, a plea for justice for a boy whose life was cut short. While there have been no developments in bringing his killer or killers to justice, the memory of Devonte as a fun-loving child who enjoyed sports and dancing endures within his community. His family continues to mourn their profound loss, remembering him as an 'angel' and a 'sweet boy' who was always smiling. A private funeral was held for him on what would have been his tenth birthday.
