In the late summer of 2020, the life of Quantravious Keturin Alexis, a 23-year-old African American man, was abruptly ended on a street in his hometown of New Iberia, Louisiana. On the evening of August 9th, violence erupted in the 900 block of Mississippi Street, culminating in a fatal shooting. First responders found Alexis at the scene suffering from a gunshot wound.
Despite the efforts to save him, he succumbed to his injuries right there on the pavement.
The New Iberia Police Department quickly launched a homicide investigation. Their inquiries soon pointed to a suspect: 21-year-old Tyron Deshean Chevalier. Investigators determined that the shooting followed a physical altercation. Alexis and Chevalier had been involved in a fistfight that had reportedly de-escalated and broken up. However, the conflict was far from over. Chevalier allegedly retrieved a handgun from a friend, returned to the scene, and shot Alexis twice. At the time of this incident, Chevalier was already facing other charges for a separate shooting and was out on bond.
Following the identification of Chevalier as the primary suspect, a warrant was issued for his arrest on a charge of second-degree murder. He was considered armed and dangerous, prompting a widespread alert. Chevalier fled the area, managing to make his way to Texas. His time as a fugitive was cut short when the United States Marshals Fugitive Task Force located and apprehended him, paving the way for his return to Louisiana to face the justice system.
The legal process moved forward, and in a development years after the shooting, Tyron Chevalier, then 26, pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of manslaughter on May 19, 2025. During a sentencing hearing held on August 6, 2025, the court heard testimony from Alexis's mother and the lead detective from the New Iberia Police Department. Following the emotional testimonies, a judge sentenced Chevalier to thirty years at hard labor for the killing of Quantravious Alexis.
