In the early morning hours of October 15, 2020, a large party in Lafayette's Moore Park, which followed a University of Louisiana at Lafayette football game, turned tragic. A fight erupted among the crowd of over 300 people, leading to a shooting that left two young men dead and two others wounded. JaKyrie Clark, a 19-year-old Black male from Lafayette, was one of the victims who succumbed to his injuries. The other deceased victim was 18-year-old Nathaniel Sharply, also of Lafayette.
Two other individuals, a 20-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man, were also shot but survived.
The Lafayette Police Department responded to a 'shots fired' call around 1:00 a.m. and discovered the four victims suffering from gunshot wounds. The investigation that followed led authorities to a suspect, Jamyron Magee, a 19-year-old from Angie, Louisiana. On November 5, 2020, agents with the U.S. Marshal's Violent Offender Task Force arrested Magee in Slidell. He was subsequently charged with two counts of first-degree murder for the deaths of Clark and Sharply, and two counts of attempted first-degree murder for the injuries to the other two victims. Magee was booked into the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center.
Despite the initial arrest and serious charges, the legal proceedings in the case took an unexpected turn. In September 2022, the District Attorney's office dismissed the murder charges against Jamyron Magee. The month prior, in August 2022, charges of accessory after the fact to murder against another individual, Caleb Allen, in connection with the deaths of Clark and Sharply, were also dismissed by the District Attorney.
