In the evening hours of January 5, 2021, in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, a burst of gunfire shattered the night on Jefferson Avenue, leaving a scene of violence that would claim the life of Trikee Kelly. Kelly, a 34-year-old African American male, was fatally wounded and died at the scene. The shooting, which occurred around 8:30 p.m. near Plank Road, also resulted in serious injuries to two other individuals, a 31-year-old man and a 37-year-old woman, who were rushed to a nearby hospital with
life-threatening injuries.
The initial investigation by the Baton Rouge Police Department left detectives searching for a motive and the person or persons responsible for the triple shooting. The two surviving victims had fled the scene in a vehicle in an attempt to find help after the shots were fired. For a time, the identity of the shooter remained a mystery, prompting law enforcement to appeal to the public for any information that could lead to an arrest.
A significant development in the case came when police identified a suspect. Lyndon B. Johnson was arrested during a traffic stop in connection with the deadly shooting. He was subsequently booked into the parish jail and faced serious charges, including first-degree murder for the death of Trikee Kelly, as well as attempted first-degree murder and illegal use of a weapon for his alleged role in the incident that injured two others.
