In the quiet town of Mer Rouge, Louisiana, a tragic event unfolded on the evening of January 17, 2021, ending the life of 39-year-old Joshua L. Comer. A white male and a respected assistant professor, Comer was fatally shot at his residence. His death was the result of a violent altercation that also left his father-in-law deceased in what authorities have determined to be a murder-suicide.
Officers from the Mer Rouge Police Department and the Morehouse Parish Sheriff's Office were
dispatched to the home around 7:30 p.m. following a report of shots fired. Upon their arrival, they discovered the bodies of both Comer and his 68-year-old father-in-law, Jack Matthews. Investigators concluded that Matthews, a local business owner, shot Comer before turning the gun on himself. The bodies of both men were sent for autopsy as part of the investigation.
According to the Morehouse Parish Sheriff, evidence suggested that a confrontation between Comer and Matthews preceded the fatal shootings. Witnesses at the scene, including Comer's wife, Cheyanne, and her mother, were interviewed by law enforcement.
