Nicholas Toms, a 23-year-old man from Shreveport, was drawn into what was supposed to be a late-day meetup over firearms, arranged through messages and set to happen at a home on Lindholm Street in Caddo Parish. As the evening of January 19, 2021 settled in, the meeting turned volatile. Police responding to the 3000 block of Lindholm Street found Toms and another man, Jacob Decamp, suffering from gunshot wounds so severe they were rushed to Ochsner LSU Health for emergency care.
For days, the shooting hung over the neighborhood like a storm that wouldn’t move on. The coroner later said Toms had been shot just before 6:00 p.m. and fought for life until he died from his injuries on January 23.
Investigators came to believe the violence wasn’t random but tethered to the deal itself. Court records describe how Dontreal D. York and Tremarcus McKenney negotiated a purchase or trade with Toms and Decamp, then arrived with a plan: if the transaction didn’t go their way, they would rob the people inside. What began as negotiation snapped into betrayal—Toms and Decamp were robbed and shot inside the residence. Decamp survived long enough to identify York as the shooter, and a neighbor also identified York as the person who fired the shots.
Arrests followed. Shreveport police obtained a warrant for York and booked him on one count of second degree murder and one count of attempted first degree murder. Tremarcus McKenney was arrested next and booked on the same charges. A third arrest came days later: Shadonald McKenney, booked for one count of second degree murder and one count of accessory after the fact, alongside the others in the case.
As the case moved through court, the most consequential resolution publicly documented centers on York. According to an appellate decision, York was initially charged with second degree murder and attempted murder, but the case was later reshaped by a plea arrangement into manslaughter and armed robbery. He pleaded guilty without a sentencing agreement, and the court imposed 40 years for manslaughter and 25 years for armed robbery, ordered to run consecutively, for a total of 65 years; the appellate court affirmed the sentence in July 2025.
For Tremarcus McKenney, later reporting indicates he pleaded guilty in January 2025 to manslaughter and attempted armed robbery in Caddo District Court, with sentencing scheduled for March 31, 2025.
