In the late hours of a Friday night in Hammond, Louisiana, a young man's life was cut tragically short. Michael Otkins II, a 20-year-old male, was discovered seated in his car on East Merry Street, near the Tickfaw town line, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Emergency services were called to the scene on February 19, 2021, and Otkins was quickly transported to North Oaks Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.
A family member later revealed the devastating extent of the attack, stating that Otkins had been shot six times.
The investigation into the death of Michael Otkins swiftly pointed to a suspect, 18-year-old Kareem Gatlin. Less than a week after the fatal shooting, on Wednesday, February 24, 2021, Gatlin voluntarily surrendered to authorities, turning himself in at the Tangipahoa Parish Sheriff's Office. Following his surrender, he was transferred to the custody of the Hammond Police Department.
