On a Sunday afternoon in New Orleans, March 28, 2021, a deadly encounter unfolded, claiming the life of 25-year-old Breyiana LaKia Brown. Brown, a female, was with her 18-year-old stepbrother, Caleb Johnson, and another individual in a vehicle at the Cypress Run Apartments in Algiers. They were reportedly there to sell a gun when the transaction turned violent.
The suspect opened fire on the three individuals inside the car.
The gunfire resulted in the tragic deaths of both Breyiana Brown and Caleb Johnson, who was a high school senior just weeks away from graduation. A third person in the vehicle was also injured in the shooting but was expected to survive. At the time of her death, Brown was wearing an ankle monitor, having been recently released from jail on a manslaughter charge.
The investigation into the double homicide led New Orleans police to 21-year-old Hollis Carter. Carter confessed to the killings and was subsequently arrested. He was charged with two counts of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder. However, the case took another violent turn.
While out on bond and on his way to a pretrial hearing in his case, Hollis Carter was shot and killed. The man arrested for Carter's murder was Bokio Johnson, the 46-year-old father of Caleb Johnson. This act of alleged retribution added another layer of tragedy to the case, leaving a trail of violence that began with the deaths of Breyiana Brown and her stepbrother.
