In the early morning hours of July 26, 2021, a devastating act of violence cut short the lives of a young couple in New Orleans. Nadia Payne, a 23-year-old African American woman, and her partner, 25-year-old Kelvin Oliver, were fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting. The incident occurred at approximately 1:24 a.m. near the intersection of Bayou Road and North Broad Street.
The couple from Baton Rouge had traveled to the city with plans for a future that would never be realized.
Payne and Oliver were inside their vehicle when another car pulled alongside them and unleashed a hail of gunfire. Both were struck and rushed to a nearby hospital for treatment. Tragically, Payne succumbed to her injuries shortly after arrival. Oliver fought for his life but was also pronounced dead. The couple, who were devoted parents to an infant daughter, had reportedly been looking forward to a trip to Cancun where Oliver intended to propose.
