In the early morning hours of July 26, 2021, a devastating act of violence cut short the lives of a young couple in New Orleans. Nadia Payne, a 23-year-old African American woman, and her partner, 25-year-old Kelvin Oliver, were fatally wounded in a drive-by shooting. The incident occurred at approximately 1:24 a.m. near the intersection of Bayou Road and North Broad Street. The couple from Baton Rouge had traveled to the city with plans for a future that would never be realized.
