In the early morning hours of a Saturday in Lafayette, Louisiana, the life of 20-year-old Brianna Berard was tragically cut short. On August 21, 2021, shortly after 2:00 a.m., police responded to a call in the 200 block of W. Foch Street. There, in the driveway of a residence, they found Berard suffering from a gunshot wound. She was rushed to a local hospital, but succumbed to her injuries.
As the investigation unfolded, officers were able to intercept a vehicle that was seen fleeing
the scene and heading towards a hospital. Inside the vehicle were three individuals who were promptly detained by law enforcement. One of the occupants, 29-year-old Emmanuel Hebert of Lafayette, was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder in connection with Berard's death.
The two other individuals in the vehicle also faced charges. One passenger, who had sustained a gunshot wound as well, was charged with simple battery. The third person, a juvenile, was charged with attempted second-degree murder. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting continued as a community mourned the loss of the young woman.
