In the late hours of a Sunday evening in New Orleans, a life was tragically cut short, leaving a family devastated and a community on edge. Russell Brewster Ricou Jr., a 41-year-old man, was in the historic French Quarter on January 9, 2022, when an argument escalated to a fatal conclusion. Near the intersection of Conti and Burgundy streets, at approximately 10:30 p.m., the verbal dispute with another man turned violent.
A single gunshot echoed through the night, and Ricou fell, having been shot in the head. He died at the scene, an unarmed victim of the sudden and brutal encounter.
The New Orleans Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the homicide. Their efforts, in conjunction with the U.S. Marshals Service, led them to a person of interest. About a month after the shooting, on February 4, 2022, authorities apprehended 38-year-old James Patton in New Orleans. Patton was subsequently arrested and booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center, initially on a charge of second-degree murder. The investigation revealed that the altercation that led to the shooting was captured on video surveillance from a nearby business, which would prove to be a critical piece of evidence.
James Patton's case proceeded through the legal system. On May 26, 2022, he was formally indicted on charges of second-degree murder, obstruction of justice, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. During a one-day trial on March 21, 2023, the prosecution presented its case, which was significantly bolstered by the video evidence. After deliberation, the jury returned a verdict, finding Patton guilty of the lesser charge of manslaughter, as well as guilty on the charges of obstruction of justice and felon in possession of a firearm.
Following his conviction, James Patton was sentenced to the maximum allowable penalties for each charge. He received a 40-year sentence for manslaughter, 20 years for obstruction of justice, and another 20 years for being a convicted felon in possession of a firearm. The resolution of the court case brought a measure of justice for the family of Russell Ricou Jr., a man who was remembered by his brother as being loved by all and greatly missed. The successful prosecution was highlighted by the District Attorney's office as a testament to the importance of community cooperation and the use of technology in holding violent offenders accountable.
