Hollis Carter, a 21-year-old male, was shot and killed in New Orleans, Louisiana, on the morning of March 23, 2022. He was in a vehicle with his mother, on his way to a court appearance, when another vehicle pulled alongside theirs on Chef Menteur Highway. An individual in the other vehicle opened fire, striking Carter in the head and critically wounding his mother.
Carter was pronounced dead at the scene, while his mother was transported to a hospital with multiple gunshot wounds.
At the time of his death, Carter was out on bond and facing two counts of second-degree murder. He was a suspect in the March 2021 slayings of 18-year-old Caleb Johnson and 25-year-old Breyiana Brown. His attorney claimed that Carter's confession to the double homicide was made under duress, alleging he was afraid of the actual killer. The shooting that claimed Carter's life was described by his lawyer as an act of 'street justice.'
Shortly after Carter's death, police arrested Bokio B. Johnson, the father of Caleb Johnson. He was charged with second-degree murder for the death of Hollis Carter and attempted second-degree murder for the injuries sustained by Carter's mother. Authorities alleged that Johnson had followed Carter from his home on the morning of the shooting. Surveillance footage showed a truck, later identified as Johnson's, pulling up next to Carter's car before the fatal shots were fired.
Bokio Johnson was subsequently indicted by a grand jury. In May 2025, after a trial, he was convicted of the murder of Hollis Carter and the attempted murder of his mother. The prosecution argued that Johnson had taken the law into his own hands in a premeditated act of revenge. Following his conviction, Johnson was sentenced to life in prison. Carter's family maintained his innocence in the double homicide he was accused of, stating that his death prevented him from ever having the chance to clear his name in court.
