On a Saturday morning in New Orleans, on February 9, 2019, the life of 43-year-old Kenneth Jones came to a violent end. Jones, a Black male, was found by First District officers from the New Orleans Police Department at approximately 8:37 a.m. in the 1800 block of Iberville Street, suffering from gunshot wounds to his head and neck. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the shooting quickly pointed to a suspect, Tyrone Cannon.
Detectives learned that the fatal encounter stemmed from a volatile romantic rivalry. Both Jones and Cannon were involved with the same woman. The night before the shooting, the woman had been with Cannon when they were awakened by the sound of breaking glass. She told police that Cannon saw Jones breaking the windows of his car and pursued him.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing Jones being chased down and shot after an argument with the driver of an older model blue car. Based on their investigation, which included witness statements and information about the love triangle, NOPD Homicide Unit detectives identified Tyrone Cannon as the perpetrator and obtained a warrant for his arrest.
Four days after the shooting, on February 13, 2019, Tyrone Cannon was arrested. He was subsequently booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center on a charge of second-degree murder. In June of the same year, an Orleans Parish grand jury indicted Cannon on charges of second-degree murder, obstruction of justice in a homicide investigation, and being a felon in possession of a firearm. If convicted of the murder charge, Cannon faces a mandatory life sentence in prison.
