A planned purchase of a cell phone through an online marketplace tragically ended in the death of 24-year-old Morgan Tyrone on April 10, 2022. The female victim, a resident of Pascagoula, Mississippi, had arranged via Facebook Marketplace to buy an iPhone 13 for $300 and traveled to Gretna, Louisiana, for the transaction. Accompanied by her partner and their 13-month-old son, Tyrone drove to an apartment complex on Friedrichs Road, believing she was meeting a female seller.
Upon their
arrival, a man, later identified as 21-year-old Daniel Tenner of Jackson, Mississippi, approached their minivan. He had been using a woman's Facebook profile to communicate with Tyrone. As they discussed the sale, hesitation grew on both sides regarding the exchange of the phone and the cash. When it seemed the deal would not happen, Tyrone turned to put the money away. At that moment, Tenner brandished a pistol and shot her in the back of the head.
After shooting Tyrone, Tenner threatened her partner with the gun and demanded the money. He reached over Tyrone's body to grab the cash and then fled. Stranded in an unfamiliar area, Tyrone's partner managed to get help from a passerby to call 911. Tenner fled to a nearby apartment and then to Jackson, Mississippi. An anonymous tip to Crimestoppers identified Tenner and his location, leading to his arrest by a U.S. Marshals Service fugitive task force.
A Jefferson Parish jury convicted Daniel Tenner of first-degree murder, armed robbery, and obstruction of justice on August 15, 2023, after three hours of deliberation. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 139 years. During the sentencing hearing, the court heard victim-impact testimony from Morgan Tyrone's mother, older brother, and partner.
