In the late hours of an April evening in Shreveport, Louisiana, a domestic incident tragically cut short the life of 47-year-old Angie C. Anders. On April 14, 2022, just after 11:45 p.m., Shreveport Police were dispatched to the 500 block of Atkins Avenue following reports of a vehicle crash and gunshots. Upon their arrival, officers discovered Anders inside a red SUV, suffering from at least one gunshot wound to her upper body.
She was quickly transported to a local hospital but was pronounced deceased upon arrival.
Witnesses at the scene were able to provide police with crucial information, identifying 58-year-old William Cherry as the individual believed to be responsible for the shooting. Cherry was reportedly inside his residence, also located in the 500 block of Atkins Street. Investigators soon learned that Cherry and Anders had been involved in what was described as a tumultuous relationship, and that Cherry had a history of violence toward women. This information prompted detectives to secure a search warrant for his home.
The situation escalated into a standoff, leading to the activation of the Special Response Team and Hostage Negotiations Team. For approximately six hours, authorities attempted to make contact with Cherry. When communication attempts failed, the Shreveport Fire Department deployed a robot into the upstairs portion of the residence. The robot located the suspect lying in a bed, appearing to be deceased. The Special Response Unit then made entry and found Cherry with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his upper body. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The Caddo Parish Coroner's Office took custody of both decedents for autopsies to be performed. The investigation into the events that led to the murder-suicide was a collaborative effort involving multiple units of the Shreveport Police Department, the Shreveport Fire Department, the Bossier City Police Department's Special Response Unit, and the US Marshals Violent Offenders Task Force.
