Orin Grant Jr., a 20-year-old Black male, was a talented percussionist with a promising future ahead of him. A graduate of the New Orleans Military and Maritime Academy, he was pursuing a degree in process technology at Nunez Community College. The son of a prominent pastor, Rev. Dr. Orin D. Grant Sr., he was deeply involved in his community and shared his musical gifts by playing the drums at his father's St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church and other local congregations.
His life, however, was tragically cut short on August 2, 2022, in Harvey, Louisiana.
On that Tuesday, while visiting his girlfriend at her home on Pailet Avenue, Grant was fatally shot. According to his father, someone related to the girlfriend asked Grant to come outside into the backyard. There, two gunmen were allegedly waiting and opened fire, shooting the young man in the back as he attempted to flee from them. Witnesses later reported seeing two men running from the scene after the sound of gunshots echoed through the neighborhood. The senseless act of violence silenced the vibrant rhythm that had been the hallmark of his young life.
The investigation into the murder of Orin Grant Jr. is still ongoing, and while the gunmen have not been apprehended, authorities have made one arrest in connection with the case. A man named Larry Dixon Jr., 41, of Harvey, was taken into custody on a charge of obstruction of justice. Dixon was the individual who allegedly asked Grant to come out of the residence just before the fatal shooting occurred. It is further alleged that Dixon drove away from the scene immediately after Grant was killed. The Jefferson Parish Sheriff's Office continues to seek information from the public as the quest for justice for Orin Grant Jr. and his grieving family continues.
