In the late afternoon of a Tuesday in Baton Rouge, a burst of violence shattered the calm at a BREC park on Evangeline Street, leading to the tragic death of 24-year-old Calvin Roberts. On September 13, 2022, Roberts was shot multiple times and rushed to a local hospital in critical condition. Despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.
The Baton Rouge Police Department's Homicide Division immediately launched an investigation into the fatal shooting.
Their efforts quickly led to the identification and arrest of two juvenile suspects, both 17 years old, for their involvement in the incident. The initial charges for the first juvenile included unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, possession of a handgun by a juvenile, illegal carrying of a handgun, and possession with intent to distribute marijuana. This same suspect also had an outstanding warrant for attempted second-degree murder in a separate case. The second juvenile was arrested for unauthorized use of a motor vehicle and possession of marijuana.
As the investigation progressed, the charges against one of the teenagers were significantly upgraded. Believed to be the one who fatally shot Roberts, his charges were elevated to first-degree murder, armed robbery, and illegal use of a weapon. Both teenagers were placed in the East Baton Rouge Juvenile Detention center. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing.
