Constable Robert G. Chasteen, aged 38, was shot and killed on August 19, 1911, in Ullin, Illinois. He was a law enforcement officer with the Ullin Police Department. Chasteen's death occurred when he was shot by the father of a man he had arrested earlier that day for disorderly conduct. The incident took place outside a local bar, where the suspect shot Chasteen through the front window.
The suspect was later arrested and convicted of murder.
On July 11, 1912, he was sentenced to 45 years of hard labor. Chasteen was survived by his wife and one child. The tragic event highlighted the dangers faced by law enforcement officers in the early 20th century and led to reflections and remembrances from family, friends, and fellow officers.
