Michael T. Caulfield, a 22-year-old white male, tragically lost his life on September 30, 1982, in Forest Park, Illinois. Officer Caulfield was shot and killed inside the Forest Park police station at 517 Desplaines Avenue. The incident occurred while he and his training officer were processing a prisoner. Another officer entered the station with a second prisoner, who managed to disarm and shoot the entering officer. Although the entering officer survived, Officer Caulfield was immediately shot in the head when he drew his weapon, resulting in his death. His training officer was also shot but managed to return fire, killing the assailant.
The suspect involved in the shooting was a prisoner who had been taken into custody by detectives. The prisoner disarmed the officer entering the room and used the officer's handgun to carry out the attack. The suspect was shot and killed by Officer Caulfield's training officer during the incident.
