Sergeant Richard Davenport Jr., aged 54, was a dedicated officer with the Chicago Police Department, having served for over 25 years. On the night of August 4, 1986, while off duty, he intervened in an attempted auto theft involving his son's car. The incident occurred at 93rd Street and Stony Island Avenue. Sergeant Davenport identified himself as a police officer and began questioning the five youths involved.
