On June 28, 1997, James Murphy, a 27-year-old man from Joliet, Illinois, was tragically killed in a violent incident that claimed the lives of four people. The events unfolded in Marseilles, a small town in north-central Illinois, approximately 30 miles west of Joliet.
The primary suspect in this case was Charles Smith, a 53-year-old man who was the estranged boyfriend of Cindy Benson, James Murphy's sister-in-law.
According to authorities, the killing spree began on Friday night when Smith and Benson, 34, got into an argument in Joliet. The altercation escalated, resulting in Smith fatally shooting Benson.
After killing Benson, Smith reportedly placed her body in his car and drove to Marseilles, where he entered the home of Jymme Murphy, 28, Benson's sister and James Murphy's wife. In a horrific turn of events, Smith allegedly shot and killed James Murphy, Jymme Murphy, and Erica Benson, Cindy's 16-year-old daughter who was staying with the couple.
The violence didn't end there. Smith reportedly raped another girl in the house, Benson's 13-year-old daughter, and attempted to strangle three young children under the age of 8. Fortunately, these children managed to escape and ran to a neighbor's house, where they alerted the police.
By the time local law enforcement arrived at the Murphy home early on the morning of June 28, they discovered a gruesome scene. In addition to the four victims, they found Charles Smith's body in the basement, where he had apparently hanged himself.
An autopsy later revealed that James Murphy had been shot four times with a .44-caliber Magnum handgun. Cindy Benson had been shot twice, while the other two victims each sustained a single gunshot wound.
This tragic incident shocked the small community of Marseilles, located about 90 miles southwest of Chicago. The case drew significant attention due to its violent nature and the number of victims involved. The authorities conducted a thorough investigation, but with the primary suspect deceased, no arrests were made in connection with these murders.
