Jason Samuel Hudson, a 29-year-old African American male, was tragically murdered on October 24, 2008, in Chicago, Illinois. He was the brother of Academy Award-winning actress and singer Jennifer Hudson. On that fateful day, Jason, along with his mother, Darnell Donerson, and his nephew, Julian King, were found shot to death in their family home on Chicago's South Side.
The bodies of Jason and his mother were discovered inside the house, while Julian's body was found three days later in a parked car on Chicago's West Side. The autopsy revealed that Julian had died from multiple gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the murders quickly led to the arrest of William Balfour, the estranged husband of Jason's sister, Julia Hudson. Balfour, who was 27 years old at the time, had a criminal history that included attempted murder, vehicular hijacking, and possession of a stolen vehicle. He was on parole and had previously lived at the Hudson family home, which linked him to the crime scene. On the day of the murders, Balfour was taken into custody by Chicago police for questioning. Although he was initially held for the maximum 48 hours without being charged, he was subsequently detained by the Illinois Department of Corrections for a parole violation.
During the investigation, it was revealed that Balfour had been seen with a gun matching the murder weapon several days before the killings. His current or former girlfriend informed investigators that Balfour had admitted to being involved in the murders. Despite these allegations, Balfour appeared at a parole hearing without an assigned attorney, as he had not yet been formally charged with the crime. On December 1, 2008, Balfour was arrested and charged with three counts of first-degree murder and one count of felony home invasion. Prosecutors alleged that Balfour committed the murders out of anger and jealousy over his estranged wife's new relationship.
The case garnered significant media attention due to Jennifer Hudson's celebrity status and the brutal nature of the crime. The trial began in April 2012, and after three days of deliberation, the jury found Balfour guilty on all counts. He was sentenced to three consecutive life sentences without the possibility of parole, plus an additional 120 years for the other charges. The Hudson family expressed relief and gratitude for the verdict, hoping it would bring some measure of closure to their devastating loss.
