Tyler Deneen Hoppe, a 23-year-old male from Alton, Illinois, tragically lost his life on December 7, 2011. Tyler, who was known for his meticulous car detailing and passion for Chevys, was found dead outside his car in an alley near his home on Hampton Avenue. The circumstances surrounding his death were grim, as it was later revealed that he had been the victim of a premeditated robbery and murder.
The investigation into Tyler Hoppe's death led to the arrest and conviction of several individuals. Nigel Generally, a 21-year-old male from Berkeley, Missouri, was identified as the primary perpetrator. Generally, along with his co-defendants Hosie Burgess Jr. and Larry Belk, had planned the robbery, believing that Tyler, who they suspected of selling marijuana, would have cash on him. On the night of the murder, two women lured Tyler into his car under the pretense of smoking marijuana. Generally and Belk then approached the car, with Generally striking Tyler in the mouth with a gun before shooting him in the side of the head.
The case saw significant developments in the following months. Nigel Generally was sentenced to 33 years in prison after being found guilty of first-degree murder. His defense claimed that he had been intimidated by Burgess, to whom he owed money, but the court did not find this argument compelling. Detective Jarrett Ford of the Alton Police Department testified that Generally was the instigator of the crime, and other witnesses corroborated this by stating that Generally had later sold the murder weapon for $100, boasting that it "had a body on it."
Hosie Burgess Jr. and Larry Belk also faced charges in connection with Tyler's murder. Burgess was charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted armed robbery. The investigation revealed that the group had initially considered robbing other victims but ultimately chose Tyler due to their belief that he would have money from drug sales. Despite their plans, the robbery did not yield any cash, and Tyler's life was senselessly taken.
