Austin Jazz Wilcox, an 18-year-old male from Alton, Illinois, tragically passed away on July 12, 2014. He was born on February 14, 1996, in Jerseyville, Illinois, to John Wilcox and Lisa Light. Austin was a talented musician and a member of the 1st Assembly of God in Wood River, Illinois. He was actively involved in the "Misfits for Jesus" ministry, where he and his father evangelized and led worship for the homeless in St. Louis. Austin graduated early with honors from Alton High School and was known for his warm-hearted nature and ever-present smile.
On the night of his death, Austin was handling a semi-automatic handgun in his apartment on Washington Avenue in Alton. According to witnesses, Austin believed the gun was not functioning properly and would not fire. While watching television with others in the living room, they heard a gunshot and turned to see that Austin had accidentally shot himself in the head. The Madison County Coroner's Office pronounced him dead at the scene. Preliminary autopsy results indicated that the cause of death was a single gunshot wound to the head. Routine toxicology tests were conducted to check for the presence of alcohol or drugs.
The Alton police conducted an investigation into the incident, but there were no arrests, suspects, or litigations related to Austin's death. The investigation concluded that the shooting was accidental, and no foul play was suspected. Austin's funeral service was held at Elias, Kallal, and Schaaf Funeral Home in Godfrey, Illinois, with Pastor Greg Harp officiating. He was laid to rest at Valhalla Memorial Park in Godfrey.
Austin's untimely death left a profound impact on his family, friends, and the community. His high school principal, Russ Tepen, expressed deep sadness over the loss, noting that Austin was always cheerful and personable. The school planned to honor his memory with a memorial or tree planting.
