Elijah Parish Lovejoy, a 34-year-old white male, was murdered on November 7, 1837, in Alton, Illinois. Lovejoy, a Presbyterian minister and staunch abolitionist, had moved to Alton after facing violent opposition in St. Louis, Missouri, due to his anti-slavery stance. In Alton, he continued his advocacy through his newspaper, the Alton Observer, which regularly published anti-slavery content. His outspoken views made him a target for pro-slavery advocates.
