Devorite Diggins, a 21-year-old African American male, was fatally shot on November 13, 2013, at a gas station in the Englewood neighborhood of Chicago, IL. The incident occurred around 2:20 p.m. when Diggins and his 21-year-old cousin entered the gas station located in the 800 block of West 59th Street. They began conversing with an associate of Diggins' cousin. As they attempted to leave the store, the associate blocked their path, forcing them to run to the back of the store.
A group of males, including Valton Cooper, cornered Diggins inside the store. Trevonti Carson then shot Diggins in the upper back and abdomen. Diggins called out for his cousin, who was hiding in another part of the store. The cousin tried to escape but was shot in the right arm. Diggins died at the scene, while his cousin suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to Stroger Hospital for treatment.
The investigation revealed that the shooting was gang-related, involving two rival groups. Trevonti Carson, 26, was charged with first-degree murder and aggravated battery/discharge of a firearm. Carson, who was on parole for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon at the time, was denied bond and faced a preliminary hearing on December 6, 2013. Valton Cooper, 25, was also charged with first-degree murder but was acquitted after a bench trial before Judge James Orbish. Cooper's co-defendant, Trevonti Carson, remained charged with murder and was scheduled to appear in court on January 22, 2015.
