Corey Williams, a 29-year-old African American male, was tragically shot and killed on February 6, 2014, in the Gresham neighborhood on the South Side of Chicago. The incident occurred around 2:15 a.m. in the 8100 block of South Marshfield Avenue. Corey Williams was found unresponsive on a sidewalk with a gunshot wound to the chest after police responded to a call of shots fired.
He was pronounced dead at Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn an hour later.
The investigation into Corey Williams' death led to the arrest of three suspects: Cordarius Lawrence, 24, Darryl Wilson, 21, and Joshua Martin, 24. According to police and prosecutors, Lawrence was identified as the individual who fired the fatal shots. The three men were charged with murder and were arrested on a warrant. During the bond court hearing, it was revealed that Lawrence had a history of criminal activity, including a 2009 robbery conviction for which he served eight years in prison, as well as convictions for unlawful use of a weapon and possession of a stolen motor vehicle. Wilson and Martin also had prior criminal records, with Wilson facing a pending case for aggravated unlawful use of a weapon and Martin being on electronic monitoring for a pending aggravated fleeing and eluding case.
Prosecutors detailed the events leading up to the shooting, stating that Wilson and Martin had pulled Corey Williams out of a car and went through his pockets while he screamed for them to stop. When Williams attempted to run, they chased him to a gas station where he spun out in a snow bank and was boxed in by their car. Lawrence then emerged from an alley and shot Williams at least twice, including in the chest. The motive for the attack was believed to be related to a previous altercation between the suspects and the victim.
The case against Lawrence, Wilson, and Martin proceeded through the legal system, with Lawrence being held without bail and Wilson and Martin having their bails set at $1 million each. The arrests and subsequent charges brought some measure of justice for the family of Corey Williams, though the loss of his life remains a tragic reminder of the violence that plagues many communities. The investigation and prosecution of the suspects highlighted the efforts of law enforcement and the judicial system to address and combat violent crime in Chicago.
