Gakirah K.I. Barnes, a 17-year-old African American female, was fatally shot on April 11, 2014, in Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred around 3:30 p.m. in the 6400 block of South Eberhart Avenue in the city's Woodlawn neighborhood. Barnes suffered multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body and was taken to Northwestern Memorial Hospital, where she was pronounced dead at 5:43 p.m. Two other individuals were injured in the shooting.
Witnesses reported that Barnes and a friend were walking along the sidewalk when a gunman opened fire, striking Barnes at least nine times. The impact of the bullets was so powerful that it threw her onto the steps of a nearby residence.
Barnes was known to be affiliated with the Gangster Disciples, a notorious street gang in Chicago. She was reputed to be a "hitta," or assassin, for the gang, and was allegedly involved in multiple shootings. Despite her young age, Barnes had a significant reputation on the streets, and her death was a high-profile case. The Chicago Police Department's investigation revealed that the shooter was a hooded figure who approached Barnes and her companions, opened fire, and then fled the scene in a vehicle.
The investigation into Barnes' murder identified Dayvon Bennett, also known as the rapper King Von, as the primary suspect. Bennett, who was affiliated with the rival Black Disciples gang, was arrested on July 22, 2014, and charged the following day. Witnesses provided statements identifying Bennett as the shooter. However, the Cook County State's Attorney's Office ultimately decided not to pursue charges against Bennett due to insufficient evidence to secure a conviction. Despite the lack of formal charges, the police report and witness testimonies strongly implicated Bennett in Barnes' murder.
Barnes' death was part of a larger pattern of gang violence in Chicago, which has claimed the lives of many young people. Her mother, Shontell Brown, has been vocal about the need for justice and has worked with various agencies to offer a reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
