Jamia Taylor, a 29-year-old African American woman, was fatally shot in Chicago’s South Shore neighborhood on February 9, 2025. The tragic incident occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 5:25 a.m., when officers responded to reports of gunfire in the 1800 block of East 79th Street. Upon arrival, police discovered Taylor unresponsive with a gunshot wound to the chest.
She was immediately transported to the University of Chicago Medical Center, where she was pronounced dead at 6:25 a.m.
Taylor, a mother of six, had been out celebrating her birthday, which had taken place just three days prior. Her family described her as a loving and devoted parent who worked two jobs—one in retail and another as a security guard—to provide for her children. She was also known for her strong social media presence under the name "Mya Da Baddie". Her mother, Tomanita Whitehorn, expressed deep sorrow over the loss, stating that the reality of her daughter's death felt like a dream. Whitehorn described Taylor as a kind-hearted and intelligent woman who always looked out for others.
As of now, no arrests have been made in connection with Taylor’s death. Chicago Police Department’s Area Four detectives are actively investigating the case, but authorities have not identified any suspects. The circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear, leaving Taylor’s family desperate for answers. Her mother questioned why anyone would target her daughter, emphasizing Taylor’s generosity and willingness to help others. The loss has left her children, ranging in age from 11 months to 12 years old, without their mother, raising concerns about their future.
