On December 17, 2016, Shacora Jackson, aged 41, was killed in a tragic mass shooting during a home invasion in the Fernwood neighborhood on Chicago's Far South Side. The incident took place at her brother Elijah Jackson's home, where multiple individuals were present. Lionel Parks, along with another gunman, forced their way into the home after visiting earlier in the day under seemingly friendly circumstances.
The assailants ransacked the residence looking for drugs and money before executing Shacora, who was pregnant, and four others, including her daughter, Nateyah Hines, age 19, Elijah Jackson, age 36, Scott Thompson, age 46, and Shakeyah Jackson, age 19.
The assailants opened fire on the victims, killing them execution-style. Parks was later tracked using an Illinois Department of Corrections ankle monitor, which documented his movements on the day of the murders. Surveillance footage also showed him leaving his residence multiple times that day and returning shortly after the shootings. Parks was ultimately convicted and sentenced to life in prison for the brutal murders.
The massacre was particularly shocking due to the calculated nature of the attack and the number of victims involved. Authorities noted that Parks was on parole at the time of the incident, a fact that further underscored the system’s failure to prevent such a tragic event.
