Barnett was shot in the Englewood neighborhood, specifically in the 7200 block of South Rockwell Avenue. He succumbed to his injuries at 9:42 p.m. on the same day. The incident occurred on June 23, 2014, when Barnett was shot near the intersection of 69th Street and Paulina Avenue.
