Jazznique "Jazz" Fort, a 15-year-old African American girl from Rockford, Illinois, tragically lost her life on January 2, 2015. Jazznique was a freshman at Auburn High School, known for her vibrant personality and aspirations of attending Duke University to become a lawyer. On that fateful night, she was in a parking lot in the 800 block of Lee Street near the Fairgrounds Valley public housing complex when several shots were fired from a passing black or gray minivan.
Jazznique was struck by a bullet in the head and was pronounced dead at the scene. A 19-year-old man was also injured in the incident, sustaining a gunshot wound to the leg and was transported to a local hospital.
Jazznique's death was the first of 19 homicides in Rockford in 2015. Despite the passage of time, no arrests have been made in connection with her murder. The Rockford Police Department continues to seek information from the public to help solve the case. Jazznique's mother, Lanetka Ingram, frequently visits the site where her daughter was killed and maintains memorials in her memory. She believes that someone in the community knows who the killer is but is reluctant to come forward out of fear of retaliation.
