Edgar Muneton, a 25-year-old Hispanic male, was fatally shot on March 25, 2015, in the Belmont Cragin neighborhood of Chicago, Illinois. The incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. at a Dunkin' Donuts located in the 5200 block of West Fullerton Avenue. Muneton got into an altercation with a group of individuals inside the doughnut shop. As he attempted to flee through the back door, he was shot multiple times.
Emergency responders found him in the alley with gunshot wounds to his abdomen, wrist, and head. He was transported to Advocate Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
The investigation into Muneton's death led to the arrest of multiple suspects. Stephon Gill, a 21-year-old reputed gang member, was the first to be charged with first-degree murder. Prosecutors revealed that Gill was enraged after rivals had attacked a fellow gang member while he was with his child. On the day of the incident, Gill, along with his brother Erick Gill and another accomplice, Alexander Gonzalez, chased Muneton and two other individuals through the Dunkin' Donuts. Surveillance footage and witness testimonies confirmed that Stephon Gill pistol-whipped Muneton and another man before opening fire. Erick Gill, 23, was also charged with first-degree murder for his involvement in the attack. He was seen handing his brother a handgun and holding the back door open during the shooting. Alexander Gonzalez, 25, faced charges of first-degree murder and possession of a controlled substance.
The legal proceedings for the suspects were swift. Stephon Gill was arrested on March 31, 2015, and held without bond. Erick Gill was charged on April 9, 2015, and held on a $2 million bond. Alexander Gonzalez was denied bail during his court appearance on April 20, 2015. The case highlighted the ongoing gang violence in Chicago and the tragic consequences it has on the community.
