Darrin Antwan Langford, a 32-year-old African American male from Rock Island, Illinois, died on April 2, 2015, following an officer-involved shooting. The incident began when Rock Island police officers responded to reports of shots fired near 12th Street and 10th Avenue shortly before 11 p.m. Upon arrival, officers encountered Langford, who was armed. A foot chase ensued, leading to a confrontation during which Officer Ryan DeRudder, an eight-year veteran of the force, fired his weapon, striking Langford. Langford was transported to Unity Point Health Trinity, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The Rock Island County Integrity Task Force conducted an investigation into the shooting. The findings revealed that Langford had been highly intoxicated and was seen firing shots into the air before the police arrived. When confronted by Officer DeRudder, Langford did not comply with commands to stop and drop his weapon. As Langford began to turn with the gun in his hand, Officer DeRudder, fearing for his safety, fired four shots, three of which struck Langford. The autopsy report indicated that Langford's death was due to a gunshot wound to the back involving the chest.
The investigation concluded that Officer DeRudder's actions were justifiable under state law, and he would not face charges. The task force's report noted that a handgun other than the officer's was found at the scene, which was later confirmed to belong to Langford's brother.
